As humanitarian principles are increasingly sidelined by EU policy, people on the move and support networks at Europe’s borders are facing growing repression. Civil actors are confronted with financial pressure, surveillance, and criminalization. This discussion session invites participants to reflect on the changes of solidary practices in the light of these dynamics, and to look ahead. How has repression affected support work – and how can it be resisted? What new strategies and alliances have emerged?

Da humanitäre Prinzipien in der EU-Politik zunehmend an den Rand gedrängt werden, sind Menschen auf der Flucht und Hilfsnetzwerke an Europas Grenzen zunehmender Repression ausgesetzt. Zivile Akteure sind finanziellem Druck, Überwachung und Kriminalisierung ausgesetzt. Diese Diskussionsrunde lädt die Teilnehmenden ein, den Wandel solidarischer Praktiken im Lichte dieser Dynamiken zu reflektieren und einen Blick in die Zukunft zu werfen. Wie hat sich Repression auf die Hilfsarbeit ausgewirkt – und wie kann ihr Widerstand geleistet werden? Welche neuen Strategien und Allianzen haben sich entwickelt?
This session provides an open exchange about the ways in which civil actors at sea and on land create spaces of mobility in a repressive political environment. Looking back on more than a decade of civil sea rescue and adjacent activism, we will examine how strategies have shifted, what challenges are currently most pressing, and what is needed to sustain and strengthen solidarity.
The workshop is planned to be part of my master’s thesis in human geography on solidary acts of resistance in the EU migratory regime. I would like to engage in collective reflection and strategic discussion with participants of different experiences and across organizational contexts.
